Employment Law and Litigation Group- Spring 2010 in Review

A primary topic at the 4-5 March meeting of the Law Group was the impact of social networking on employment laws and regulations. Elise Bloom of Proskauer Rose offered a number of observations and suggestions to members. First, the issues relate not only to social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and the like, but also to employee blogs and wikis both within and outside the organisation. In general, employers must balance the benefits of social networking against the potential liabilities.

Social Networking: Developing Etiquette Standards

The process of creating new rules to cope with the expanding reach of social networks has just begun and will be shaped by individuals and organizations, not from “decrees from a digital Emily Post”, according to Wharton faculty and other experts. What are the issues that will factor into the new etiquette? According to Wharton management professor Nancy Rothbard, “new communications technologies are eroding boundaries between home and office,” and will lead to conflict toward life roles and “your ability to be fully present in any one domain”.
