US Supreme Court agrees to hear case on Arizona immigration law

The US Supreme Court has agreed to hear the state of Arizona’s appeal of the decision blocking enforcement of its immigration law, reported the Los Angeles Times. The Department of Justice had asked the Court to deny the appeal.

The decision blocked enforcement of many of the law's provisions including those requiring the police to check the immigration status of any person it stopped and to detain any not able to prove they are legally in the US. The issue before the Court will be whether the state law interferes with the federal government’s authority to enforce immigration laws. Justice Elena Kagan will recuse herself from the decision.
