Global Diversity Update: Trends and Developments
Elizabeth MacGillivray and Deirdre Golden, Mercer
An overview and interactive discussion of new and emerging trends and developments
across all world regions on the issues of:

  • Demographics- ageing workforce, generational differences, and the impact of immigration
  •  Disability- from quotas to inclusion
  • Gender – labour force participation trends, moving women in corporate leadership, representation on boards, political participation
  • Social divisions – addressing class, caste and other disparities
  • Diversity charters and other voluntary employer efforts

Best Practice: J. P. Morgan’s Global Learning and Development Tool
James Bland, Global Head of Training & Development, will discuss J.P. Morgan’s
global diversity tool and how the organisation incorporates it in D&I initiatives.

Diversity in Emerging Markets: India and China
Members will discuss how their global diversity and inclusion initiatives are being
tailored for and implemented in two rapidly growing markets. Recent research will be
discussed, and members will present their approaches and experiences in these
countries.

India
Samantha Bidwell, Global Diversity and Inclusion Manager and Mridula
Sharma, Diversity and Inclusion Program Manager – India, will give an
overview of American Express’s diversity journey in India that focuses on gender
and Generation Y.

Kamaljit Kerridge-Poonia is an expert on diversity, who has worked in a wide
range of organisations and contexts in diversity. Kamaljit has worked extensively
in the UK, as Principle Policy Advisor on Diversity for the Cabinet Office;
Diversity Adviser at the Department for International Development and is
currently Diversity Adviser at the University of Southampton. She will share with
us her insights and perspectives on the diversity challenges and issues facing organisations working in India drawing on her research carried out in the India
office of the Department for International Development, and through her own
experience as an Asian woman.

China
Beyond the multi-cultural challenges and talent management issues that many
companies in China struggle with, a look at diversity in China uncovers myriad
challenges for employers, including generational diversity, ethnic diversity and
conflicts, language diversity, gender imbalance, elder care, disability, LGBT
rights. Members will hear about extensive research undertaken by The British
Council, UK's international organisation for cultural relations and education
opportunities, which has a presence in 110 countries around the world, including 4
offices in mainland China and a large office in Hong Kong. Jim Hollington,
Director, Global Arts Team, The British Council (China) will join a discussion
with Deirdre Golden on diversity in China drawing on Jim's own personal
experience and the research undertaken by China colleagues with the involvement
of the British Council global diversity team.

Confidential Member Roundtable
In this confidential forum, members will present current challenges, compare different
companies’ approaches to diversity, and share best organisational practices from
around the globe. Particular attention will be paid to how companies manage the
tensions and synergies that emerge when managing global diversity efforts from
Europe and North America in Asia and developing markets.

  • Member topics include:
  • Raising awareness amongst top 200 senior leaders; gaining commitment of senior leadership
  • Upskilling managers on practical implications and benefits of D&I
  • Global Leadership - what are the key skills and capabilities?
  • Gender quotas

  • Global metrics - has anyone implemented long term strategic analysis/measures globally (rather than snap shot or representation metrics and trackers)
  • Supplier diversity in Europe
