Global Workplace Compliance Network Webcast- Employment Law in South America
South America is home to the world’s seventh largest economy: Brazil. In Chile, Panama and Argentina, voters are abandoning extremists and revolutionaries in favor of free-market-minded centrists. In growing numbers, the people of South America are embracing the promises of the free market; but the traditions, practices and bureaucratic hurdles in this diverse region present unfamiliar challenges to many U.S. employers. Our panel of experts, including speakers from Argentina, Ecuador, Venezuela and Brazil, will discuss the work behaviors, key labor laws, and influence of organized labor across this increasingly influential region.
The panel will be moderated by Jacqueline Scott of Fortney & Scott, LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm that advises and assists U.S. employers expanding outside the United States, and counsels foreign clients on complying with U.S. workplace laws. With more than 25 years in practice, Scott has significant experience and expertise in adjudicating both U.S. and international commercial and employment disputes. She currently serves as the United States’ Member of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal, the seven-member, independent appellate forum of last resort that adjudicates claims made by United Nations employees, worldwide. She formerly served as First Vice President of the Tribunal. Scott also regularly adjudicates international disputes in both New York and Geneva, Switzerland.
Speakers include:
- José Balta of Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano Abogados, Peru
- Paulina Miranda of Carey y Cia, Chile
- Gabriela Cruz-Devoto of Estudio Beccar Varela, Argentina
- Pilar López of Brigard & Urrutia, Colombia
