*About Inviting Death to Dinner
Chopsticks are used in many countries throughout Asia, and chopstick etiquette varies from country to country. In China and Japan, chopsticks should not be placed vertically in a bowl of rice. This resembles a funerary rite and an offering of food to the deceased. Placing crossed chopsticks on the table also may be considered a symbol of death.
To avoid disastrous faux pas, GWCN members, and other U.S.-based in-house attorneys and U.S.-based workplace compliance professionals, will get a crash-course in working successfully with colleagues in Asia from three savvy business travelers. This one-hour webinar will deliver practical tips for preparing your trip, conducting successful business meetings, and more. Based on their personal experience, our speakers will share stories that will help you decode local customs and interact more confidently with your colleagues from Asia.
Our panel of experts will include:
• Caroline Croft, Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, U.S. State Department
• Paul B. Edelburg Esq., Counsel, Murtha Cullina LLP
• Wendy C. Shiba, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, KB Home
The panel will be moderated by Jacqueline Scott of Fortney & Scott, LLC, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm that advises and assists U.S. employers expanding outside the United States, and advises and counsels foreign-based clients on complying with U.S. workplace laws. With more than 25 years in practice, Ms. Scott has significant experience and expertise in adjudicating both U.S. and international commercial and employment disputes. She currently serves as the United States’ Member of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal, the seven-member, independent appellate forum of last resort that adjudicates claims made by United Nations employees, worldwide. She formerly served as First Vice President of the Tribunal. Ms. Scott is based in Washington, D.C. and also regularly adjudicates international disputes in both New York and Geneva, Switzerland.
